How to play 29 by Demi Lovato

2024 rocker 29 by Demi Lovato is a great high-energy track for developing electric players. A single from her eighth studio album Holy Fvck, 29 features a nice blend of accompaniment textures for electric guitar, including tenths, power chords, full chords and a nice dynamic curve from the verse through to the highpoint of the chorus.

Pick or Fingers? Pick, definitely. Rock tracks like 29 need the strong, precise attack that a pick makes on electric guitar strings. Hold the pick securely with your thumb-pad flat on 3/4 of the pick & include your forearm in the down - up action to create a strong strum attack.

Acoustic or Electric? Electric guitar, for sure. Don’t risk your hand health by playing full bar-chords on an acoustic guitar for a whole song. The electric guitar is designed for this kind of chord work; acoustic guitars are not.

What are the chord names in the verse for? The lead riff in the verses is a pattern of β€˜tenths’ ; an interval of a bass note with a note an octave and a third above it. Although two notes does not constitute a full chord it creates a strong harmonic outline. The implied chords in the verse are named to give the option of a second instrument adding some accompaniment beneath the lead part.

How do I make it sound like the recording? Set your amp to a medium overdrive tone for the intro and verse and use an effect like the tremolo on a Fender amp. Don’t overdo it; a moderate level for a tone modulating effect is enough. Then use a channel switch, or a pedal to add some distortion and a small volume boost for the increased power of the chorus.
