How to play Roll With It by Oasis
Roll With It by Oasis is the second single from their smash hit 1995 album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? One of four hit singles from the album, Roll With It was a hit in many countries and Oasis became one of the most successful bands in the world during the ‘Britpop’ era. It’s strong rhythms and well defined chord structure make an ideal chart for electric players.
Chords: D7 C7 G A5 Am C G/B D D4 D/C F
What does G/B and D/C mean? Chord symbols with a / followed by another letter name tell us the chord has a bass note that is not the tonic note (‘name-note’) ; ‘G/B’ means ‘G over an B bass’ ; ‘D/C’ means ‘D over an C bass’
Do I have to use the F and G bar-chords? No, if you can’t manage bar chords, just use the open-position shapes. The F bar-chord includes the low F bass note we hear in the recording but is not essential for basic chord accompaniment. Also, it’s okay to play the basic D7 in the intro, if you prefer.
Pick or Fingers? Definitely the pick for this one; the strong rhythm tone of the original is produced by pick strumming.
Acoustic or Electric? Electric guitar ideally but Roll With It will also work on steel-string acoustic.
Lead guitar : the lead solo after the second chorus uses G major pentatonic, is playable in the open-2nd position and mostly on the 3rd and 4th strings.
