David Glavich

Guitar teacher DavidHaving taken up the guitar at age 12, I was instructed by Michelle Nelson for some 7 years completing up to a Grade Eight in ANZCA Modern Guitar Exams. This time really set me up for the further learning I would do out of classes on my own accord in the following years. I’ve since completed a Diploma of music at MWT institute and concentrated on developing myself as a musician.

I currently play in funk/soul band “Knight at the Discotheque” and we regularly gig around Melbourne, which allows me to practice playing loud on stage - a different kettle of fish to playing at low levels in a practice session - not to mention the kick you get from making music with good friends and pro muso’s. Our achievements to date include supporting Vanessa Amorosi on the Melbourne leg of her tour, supporting Michael Paynter and recording and printing a self- titled EP (available from our site or through me). This project has really honed my interest and abilities in groove and Funk rhythm.

On the horizon is a Rock Fusion ensemble that’s currently in the works and providing many hurdles for me as a player, providing great motivation to extend my soloing range. This band also gives me an opportunity to further refine my rig. Currently I’m playing Cornford and Fender amps, with Strat and Tele-style guitars including G&L Asats, ESP vintage plus and a Musicman Silhouette Special, plus numerous cool pedals…Gear is great... :-)

I’ve been teaching since 2005 and enjoy working with a range of students, from beginners up - young and old! I aim to instill good basic techniques into my students - this is so important to do when you are new to the guitar.  Once basic technique and confidence become established I then ensure that students learn to play whole songs (not just bits and pieces) whilst continuing to refine their general abilities. I also aim to impart the idea that good music is created with feeling and when done so it provides a rewarding experience; whilst good technique is certainly important to have, it is good tone & phrasing that really creates the art in music.

Favourite artists and bands

"My favourite artists and bands range from all the old gold stuff like Hendrix, Robin Trower, Dire Straits and The Eagles to more modern players like Andy Timmons, John Mayer, Jeff Kollman (Cosmosquad + Bombastic Meatbats) Guthrie Govan and Joe Satriani. In fact I began playing guitar because of hearing Satch’s “Surfing with the Alien” album on cassette, which I attribute to my uncle! Others such as Rage Against The Machine, Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, On The Virg (Virgil Donati), Planet X, Red Hot Chilli Peppers also make my must have list.

Music that exudes real creativity is what I look for now; appreciating that someone spent many hours writing and refining a piece before the long process of funding, recording, publishing, distributing and promoting the music they believe in. Even if I’m not excited by the genre of a good recording, I still rate highly the effort of the artist in creating it and it’s worth as a piece of music.

With my own playing and writing I aspire to cover as many genres as I can and feel this stylistic breadth is an important part of being an effective teacher of modern guitar.  So whether you’re looking to play Pop, Funk, 70s Rock, Reggae, Grunge, Metal or just concentrate on that two bar measure that gets you lost every time, I’m confident I can help you achieve your music goals."
